Perilla Leaf Tea with Lemon and Mint

Perilla leaves, known for their fresh, earthy flavour, create a soothing tea perfect for cleansing and supporting digestion. Adding lemon can enhance the colour, turning it a beautiful pink or purple, and mint adds a refreshing twist.

Ingredients

  • 1 small bunch of fresh perilla leaves (about 10–15 leaves)
  • 1–2 litres of water
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced (optional, for colour and flavour)
  • A few fresh mint leaves (optional, for added freshness)
  • Honey or rock sugar (optional, for sweetness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Perilla Leaves

    • Rinse the perilla leaves thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt.
  2. Brew the Perilla Leaf Tea

    • Bring 1–2 litres of water to a boil in a pot.
    • Add the perilla leaves, reduce heat, and let simmer for about 10–15 minutes until the tea is a light green or golden colour.
  3. Add Lemon and Mint

    • After removing the pot from heat, add the lemon juice. The tea should change to a beautiful pink or purple hue.
    • If you’d like a minty freshness, add a few mint leaves as well.
  4. Strain and Sweeten (Optional)

    • Strain the tea into a teapot or jug. Add honey or rock sugar if desired, stirring until dissolved.
  5. Serve and Enjoy

    • Pour into a cup and enjoy warm, or let it cool and refrigerate for a refreshing cold tea. This tea can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days.
